Match Report / Sevilla 1-2 Real Sociedad
Matchday 31 – Sevilla 1-2 Real Sociedad – Match Report
Sunday 3rd April 2016
Sevilla’s incredible run of home victories finally came to an end last night as they were rather surprisingly beaten 1-2 by Real Sociedad, who played the final 25+ minutes with only 10 men. This halted a run of 13 straight League wins at home by the Andalusians.
Real surprised the home team by started without a recognised striker. Jonathas was left on the bench and this allowed the visitors to play Zurutuza, who strengthened the midfield in an attempt to contain the Sevilla offensive game.
Real git off to a fantastic start when Markel Bergara headed the Basques in front after just two minutes from a well delivered free kick taken by Illarramendi. Another Illarra free kick resulted in Krychowiak’s own goal on 35 minutes, doubling Real’s advantage at half time. The home side had offered very little going forward during the first period and were surprised by the effectiveness of the pressing game of their visitors.
Sevilla started the second half in a much more positive mood and Kevin Gameiro pulled a goal back from the penalty spot early in the second half, after a clumsy challenge on Rami by Markel Bergara. The Real midfield player followed this by being sent off in the 68th minute for another rash challenge which resulted in his second yellow card.
This gave Sevilla the boost they needed and they pushed forward searching for a second goal. Down to only 10 players and with over 25 minutes left, Eusebio’s men were very resilient and continued to resist the onslaught from Sevilla. Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli foiled Sevilla on many occasions as they searched for an equaliser. Although in contrast, Rulli also displayed some typical poor kicking which is unfortunately a regular feature in his game.
Sevilla Coach Unai Emery bought on N’Zonzi and Konoplyanka in an attempt to find fresh impetus, but an equaliser for Sevilla never materialised. This result effectively ends any chance of Sevilla gaining automatic Champions League qualification via their league position. They stay in 7th place while Real Sociedad climb to 10th position on the back of this result.
Overall Real showed great courage, commitment and organisation as they resisted a strong home team to hold out for a much needed, and well earned 3 points. Both Inigo and Illarra had fantastic games but every player contributed well to what was a most unexpected victory. The team showed real spirit which has often been absent on other occasions.
The match statistics showed: Possession 64/36% in favour of Sevilla, we managed 6 shots of which only 3 were on target. We won 3 corners and received 4 yellow cards: Oyarzabal (26 minutes), Markel Bergara (50 mins), Rulli (75 mins) and Yuri (90 mins), and 1 red card (Markel Bergara 68 mins).
